Ten Steps Success Story by Paulina Chen

Ten Steps Success Story by Paulina ChenTen Steps Success Story by Paulina ChenTen Steps Success Story by Paulina ChenFrom the Introduction by Paulina Chento the Jobseekers Guide 8th EditionThis book actually works, and I am bedrngnis just saying that because I worked on this book.I have helped design and edit many of the previous editions of the Jobseekers Guide, but this time was different. This time, I actually applied for and got my dream federal job using the very same Ten Steps that you hold in your hands right now.The funny thing is that I started off my federal job search by doing research for this eighth edition. When OPM updated USAJOBS in August 2016, I jumped on the website to check out the changes for this book. I ended up following the rabbit all the way into the rabbit hole until I received a federal job offerHere are a few tidbits that I have learned along the wayStep 1 Research the Federal Job Search ProcessThe more you know, the better your chances of success. For e xample, I had worked as a GS-13 before, but I was willing to apply for a GS-12 based on the pay range, and I knew I had an even better chance of landing a GS-12 job. Also, I was hired into a different organization than I previously worked in, but the missions are related, and that helped my application as well.Step 2 NetworkingI did not network to find this position, but networking played a key role in my job search nonetheless. I had to ask for help from many different people for information, for references, and for smoothly processing my application and hiring. In fact, good networking skills are critical for overall career success.Step 3 Research Vacancy Announcements on USAJOBSYou will have to spend time playing around with your search criteria to get the right combination of flexibility and specificity. When I finally figured out what worked for me, my search results ended up usually being about eight screens long. It was tedious to sort through the listings every time I refr eshed my search, so I figured out that I could sort the list according to the deutsche post aging dates and just check the end of the list every day or two. With minimal effort, I found three announcements that matched my skills even though they have very different titles Visual Information Specialist, Technical Editor, and Training Manager.Want to know my favorite tip on reading vacancy announcements? Do a treasure hunt search for the link in the announcement that says View the Questionnaire (or similar phrase). Here is your magic list of the knowledge, skills, and abilities for the job announcement. If you cannot answer E or Expert for at least 85% of those questions, then you need not apply. Getting closer to 95% is even better. It is important to neither deflate nor inflate your answers, though most people tend to shortchange themselves by deflating their answers. Remember to support your answers in your resume.Step 4 Analyze Vacancy Announcements for KeywordsKeywords are actua lly a part of step 3 (announcement research), but they are so important that they deserve their very own step. You absolutely must hit the keywords from the job announcement in your resume. The problem is that every announcement has different keywords, which means that every resume you submit should be different. Yes, it is a lot of work, but you will experience 0% success unless you submit to this truth.Step 5 Analyze Your Core CompetenciesCore competencies are sourced both from who you are as well as from the keywords in the job announcement. For example, I always include written communication as one of my core competencies in every resume, because it is one of my stronger skills, but when it is a keyword in a job announcement, I give it additional attention and air time in my resume.Step 6 Write Your Outline Format and Paper Federal ResumesThe Outline Format is the most effective format for your federal resume, not only because it is easy to read, but also because it is easy to adapt for different vacancy announcement keywords. If you want to read a fun and easy explanation of the Outline Format, check out my blog post Help Me Hire a Minion.Step 7 KSAs, Accomplishments, and QuestionnairesAccomplishments are not optional. I find them to be most important when you are referred and the hiring manager reviews your resume. When viewed among the best of the best candidates, your accomplishment stories will make you memorable. They are also the launching point to a successful bewerbungsinterview.I included in my resume that we won six book awards for books I designed last year, and this became a discussion point in my interviews.Step 8 Apply for Jobs in USAJOBSI submitted my resume using the upload resume feature in USAJOBS. However, I am considered an advanced submitter. If you are a beginner, I highly recommended that you use the resume builder for your first or second drive out until you learn the important rules of the road.Step 9 Track and Follow UpI lov e the new colored application status graphics on the USAJOBS website, especially because I did not receive notification emails. In some cases, the USAJOBS website had extremely up-to-the-minute information.Step 10 Interviewing The Best Secret in All of Federal HiringI went through all nine yards of the interview process a phone interview (60 minutes), a writing sample submission, AND an in-person behavior-based interview (90 minutes). I survived this arduous journey with the help of the interview tips in this book and our other publications.I was the very fortunate person to be the first to read and test the brand-new negotiating your job offer techniques we added to this edition, and I am happy to tell you that I achieved 100% success with the submission of a Superior Qualifications Letter. This negotiation information alone makes this book worth buying. We think that, currently, you will not find this information anywhere else in the world.May the Ten Steps be with you on your o wn federal job huntWith thanks to Kathryn and the Resume Place for the opportunity help federal jobseekers worldwide,Paulina ChenDevelopmental Editing and Interior Page LayoutWant your own copy?

Why you should allow yourself to get bored more often

Why you should allow yourself to get bored more oftenWhy you should allow yourself to get bored more oftenI couldnt remember the last time I was bored. It was two years ago. I had just woken up and reached over to my bed stand to grab my phone so I can take my morning dose of digital notifications. As I was about to start scrolling through my various feeds, I had an epiphany.I couldnt remember the last time I was bored.Along with my VHS player and Bon Jovi cassettes, boredom had become a relic of the past. Gone were the days when I would lie awake in bed in the morning, bored out of my mind, and daydream for a while before deciding to immerse myself into reality. Id no longer twiddle my thumbs while waiting for a haircut or strike up a conversation with a stranger waiting in line at a coffee shop.I know Im not alone here. We fill - no stuff - every moment of our day with activity. We switch from one form of social media to the next, check our schmelzglas, catch up on the news- all w ithin a span of twenty minutes. We prefer the certainty of these distractions over the uncertainty of boredom (I dont know what to do with myself, and Id rather not find out).During rare moments of tranquility, we feel almost guilty. As notifications scream their 100-decibel sirens for attention, we feel compelled to sneak a peek at them so we dont miss out. Rather than being proactive, we spend most of our days - and our lives - playing defense against the onslaught of notifications and rapid-fire breaking news. Our responses stoke, rather than put out, the fire. Each email we send generates even more emails. Each Facebook message and tweet gives us a reason to return. Its a Sisyphean torture, endlessly rolling a boulder up an impossible hill. All this churn feels productive, but its not. Were hamsters entrapped in a wheel. There will soon be a whole generation of people who lived their lives without ever being bored.I see two major problems with this trend. The decline of boredom u ndermines our ability to think. And if we dont take the time to think, we cant question what we hear. Over time, our critical-thinking muscles begin to atrophy due to disuse. We move from one notification to the next and one Google hit to the other without pausing, understanding, and deliberating. (This, by the way, is exactly what Silicon Valley wants Were not supposed to think. Were supposed to hit Buy now, with one click.).Without a public unwilling to question - really question - what they hear, democracy decays and misinformation spreads. The reality comes close to the dystopian fiction depicted in Fahrenheit 451 where front porches are eliminated for their undesirable side effectsMy uncle says there used to be front porches. And people sat there sometimes at night, talking when they wanted to talk, rocking, and not talking when they didnt want to talk. Sometimes they just sat there and thought about things, turned things over. But they didnt want people sitting like that, do ing nothing, rocking, talking that was the wrong kind of social life. People talked too much. And they had time to think. So they ran off with the porches.Another casualty of a world without porches is creativity. Theres a saying that I love Its the silence between the notes that makes the music. Its the silence, generated by boredom, that spurs innovation and catalyzes creative thinking. Even when it appears to be idling, the brain is still active. As you get bored, your subconscious kicks in and begins forming new connections. This is why the best ideas come to you in the shower. This is why numerous creatives and entrepreneurs credit boredom for their success. Ideas come from daydreaming, the author Neil Gaiman explains. They come from drifting, that moment when youre just sitting there. When people ask Gaiman for advice on how to be a writer, his answer is simple Get bored.Stephen King agrees. He believes that boredom can be a very good thing for someone in a creative jam. It was during a boring train ride that the idea for Harry Potter simply fell into J.K. Rowlings head. The Hobbit was also borne out of boredom. As Professor Tolkien was grading, bored out of his mind, he scribbled on one exam paper, for no apparent reason, the following sentence In a hole in the ground, there lived a hobbit. Thats how the opening line to The Hobbit was conceived.Other examples abound. Phil Knight, the co-founder of Nike, had a chair in his living room dedicated to daydreaming. Albert Einstein believed that the gift of fantasy has meant more to me than my talent for absorbing positive knowledge. In yet another memorable quote, George Bernard Shaw said, Few people think more than two or three times a year. Ive made an international reputation for myself by thinking once or twice a week.Following in the footsteps of these masterminds, I decided to rekindle my long-lost affair with boredom. I began deliberately building time into my day that I would call airplane mode when I s it on my recliner doing nothing but thinking and daydreaming. I spend 20 minutes, four days a week, in the sauna, with nothing but a pen and paper in hand. Odd distributionspolitik for writing? Yes. But some of the best ideas in recent memory occurred to me in that solitary, stifling environment. The next time you feel boredom arising, resist the temptation to take a hit of data. Instead do what you did as a six-year-old Embrace boredom and begin daydreaming. The results will surprise you.Ozan Varol is a rocket scientist turned law professor and bestselling author.Click hereto download a free copy of his e-book, The Contrarian Handbook 8 Principles for Innovating Your Thinking. Batteries for Managing the Grid

Batteries for Managing the Grid Batteries for Managing the Grid Until now, large costs and limited manufacturing capacity of batteries for large-scale electrical storage have kept utilities from committing to the technology. Now, a Texas electric distribution utility is stepping out with a plan to spend up to $5.2 billion on batteries to back up its transmission and distribution grid and reduce power fluctuation from renewable power sources. In a study it performed to justify the plan, Oncor Electric Delivery claims the move would lower consumer electric bills and preclude costly construction of new power plants. But there is a catch In Texas, distribution utilities such as Oncor now are prohibited from owning power plants, and state lawmakers, who deregulated the industry 12 years ago, would have to amend a law defining batteries as a power producer. Oncor officials are pushing for legislation to be introduced for the change, but opposition is already brewing from power producers, in cluding sister companies of Oncor.ConfidenceStill, the proposal shows a growing confidence in the viability of lithium-ion batteries for large-scale energy storage. A study done by Navigant Research shows grid energy storage jumping to 20,800 MW by 2024, from 538.4 MW this year. Revenue is expected to grow to $15.6 billion annually, from $675 million, projects the report.Batteries would allow the utility to store and more effectively manage electric distribution from the grid. Image Oncor.comFor Texass state-wide grid, according to a study performed for Oncor by the Brattle Group, Cambridge, MA, 3,000 MW to 5,000 MW of grid-integrated storage would be the most cost-effective solution, based on installed cost of storage of $350 per kWh. Other analysts believe the price of batteries for storage will drop by half over the next seven to eight years, to $230 per kWh.The price reduction is expected to come from economies of scale, and a lot of that is tied to Tesla Motors rapid movement o n building its $5-billion gigafactory in Nevada, which is projected to churn out batteries for 500,000 vehicles per year. Now scheduled to open in 2017, officials have said about 30% of production would be for utility-sized batteries. The plant in Reno, NV, also will produce batteries that can be used with rooftop solar systems to produce and then store power. SolarCity Corp., a sister company of Tesla (both are led by engineer and entrepreneur Elon Musk), is offering solar panels packaged with lithium-ion batteries for sale to California homeowners and companies.Oncor executives will not comment on their plans, but have said in published reports they expect battery prices to be competitive by 2018. A spokeswoman says Oncor does not have a detailed plan in place, but batteries would be installed across the entire state-wide grid, not only in its service area. The states grid has a capacity of about 81,000 MW.Scaling UpFor the plan to work, the Brattle report claims the batteries must be installed across the entire grid.Considering both the impact on electricity bills and improved reliability of grid-integrated storage, customer benefits would significantly exceed costs, says Judy Chang, the lead author of the study. However, while beneficial from an integrated system-wide perspective, an efficient scale of storage deployment would not be reached if deployed by merchant developers who rely solely on participation in the wholesale market, or by retail customers who use it solely for backup power, or by wires companies who deploy it solely for capturing transmission and distribution benefits. These entities, independently and separately, will not be able to capture the full value of the storage to viably sttze the magnitude of investment. The U.S. Department of Energy lists Texas as having the most installed capacity from wind turbines, at 12,976 MW. Sparsely populated West Texas is a natural spot for wind machines. But wind, along with solar systems, produce power intermittently and feeding it into the grid efficiently presents operational problems. The state also is seeing increasing investment not only in utility-scale solar systems, but in smaller rooftop systems, often individual homeowners. Oncor officials believe batteries will provide an efficient way of managing distributed loads and storing energy until it is needed.Other states are pursuing batteries as well, and Navigant researchers believe the market is on the threshold of growth. The grid-scale energy storage market continues to develop in a piecemeal fashion, but there are signals it is poised for significant expansion in the coming years, writes Anissa Dehamma, a Navigant senior research associate. In particular, after several years of faltering growth, lithium-ion batteries are emerging as the breakout technology in this sector. As Oncor pursues its plan in Texas, state officials in California also are pushing utilities to embrace the technology. In 2013, state power officials formalized plans for California utilities to build 1,300 MW of storage capacity by 2020. Southern California Edison, one of the states three large investor-owned utilities, recently announced it had signed contracts for 250 MW of storage, including batteries. For Further Discussion After several years of faltering growth, lithium-ion batteries are emerging as the breakout technology.Navigant Research

The Impact of Climate Change

The Impact of Climate Change The Impact of Climate Change Global climate change will bring about shifts in average weather patterns that will influence many aspects of our lives, including the quality of the air we breathe. But the computational problem of understanding how global climate change effects local pollution is huge.Individual weather patterns are difficult to forecast more than a week in advance because it is impossible to measure all of the factors that may influence future trendsa classic example of a chaotic system. An Emissions TrapTypical air pollution episodes occur when warm air masses in the upper atmosphere stagnate over cold ones near the surface, eliminating any significant vertical exchange of mass or momentum. This traps emissions close to the ground and suppresses horizontal wind speed, compounding the buildup of pollutant concentrations. Depending on the temperature and cloud cover (which alters UV radiation), various chemical reactions transform primary emiss ions into the two chief components of photochemical smog ozone and airborne particulate matter (PM). Emissions themselves are relatively constant and day-to-day variability in air pollution is largely caused by variation in weather patterns.Air pollution concentrations change quickly over relatively short spatial scales. For example, western Los Angeles typically experiences much different pollutant concentrations than their neighbors 50 to 100 km downwind to the east. Global climate models usually have spatial resolution of 100 km, making it difficult to resolve changes in local weather patterns that influence air pollution events. Rather than waiting for increasing computational speed to make regional air pollution calculations practical within models, scientists and engineers around the world have chosen to dynamically downscale climate output using standalone regional weather and air pollution models.Their predictions are used as anfangsbuchstabe and boundary conditions for a mes oscale meteorological model that can typically predict weather patterns with 4-5 km resolution. The meteorological model may also include a description of the regional air pollution chemistry or these calculations can be carried out with a standalone reactive chemical transport model developed for air pollution analysis. One of the most consistent results to date is the finding that climate change will encourage higher surface ozone concentrations in some regions of the United States, largely through the effects of temperature on precursor emissions and chemical reaction rates.Impact on Particulate MatterThe effect of climate on PM has proven more challenging to understand than comparable studies for ozone. PM is composed of many different chemical compounds in solid or liquid form across sizes ranging from a few nano-meters to tens of microns (larger particles typically deposit quickly to the ground).Climate change simultaneously affects temperature, humidity, wind speed, cloud cov er, and precipitation which all influence PM formation in different ways. The state-of-the-science predictions for climate effects on PM concentrations have downscaled multiple years of PM concentrations to 10km spatial resolution in the present climate and the future climate with tremendous computational cost.Though the computational burden is already high, much more work remains before we truly understand the impact of the climate on regional PM concentrations. Most studies use a single global climate model. But different models produce different estimates for future climate. Several models, with a variety of regional weather and air quality data, will need to be downscaled to develop a consensus about the effects of future climate on PM concentrations. For instance, the frequency of wildfires in some regions across the world is likely to increase, with dire consequences for nearby air quality. But wildfires themselves are random events that can only be studied in a stochastic sens e over long averaging timesa truly monumental computing challenge that is just barely achievable using todays technology.Luckily, computational power continues to increase at a relatively constant cost every few years. Scientists and engineers with strong fundamental programming skills and cross cutting knowledge of computer science, atmospheric fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, and chemistry will have a better understanding of climate-air quality problems in the coming years.Adapted from The Impacts of Global Climate Change on Regional Air Pollution by Michael Kleeman, for ME Today.Air pollution concentrations change quickly over relatively short spatial scales.

Study reveals women are more productive when the temperature is higher

Study reveals women are more productive when the temperature is higherStudy reveals women are more productive when the temperature is higherIf youre familiar with the constant workplace struggle of women complaining its too cold and men complaining its too hot (albeit not every woman and every man), your sekretariat most likely struggles with the battle of the thermostat. But as it turns out, both women and men have a more valid argument than just wanting to be comfortable, according to a study published May 22 by Tom Chang and Agne Kajackaite from the USC Marshall School of Business, Los Angeles, USA, and the WZB Berlin Social Science Center, in Berlin, Germany.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreThe study indicated that temperature actually has an effect on cognitive performance and productivity, and these effects vary based on gender. Authors wrote that ordinary variations in room temperature can affect cognitive performance significantly and differently for men and women.Women performed better on math and verbal tests when it was hotterChang and Kajakaite had 543 German students take logic, math, and verbal tests in a room that was either cooled or heated to a range of temperatures between 61and 91 degrees Fahrenheit. ansicht students were getting paid based on the number of answers they answered correctly, so you know they were trying their very best. The results showed that female students generally performed better on math and verbal tests when the room was at the warmer end of the spectrum. At higher temperatures, women both attempted to solve andactually succeeded in solving correctly more math and verbal tasks than at lower temperatures.Men perform better on math and verbal tests at lower temperaturesIn contrast to female students, male students performed better on the math and verbal tests when the room was set to a lower temperature. Not only did mal e students submit fewer correct responses when the room was warmer, but actually submitted fewer responses in general.Perhaps the most interesting observation is that the increase in scores in women participants in response to higher temperatures is significantly larger than the decrease in the male students performance. So does this mean that women in the office now have the more valid argument?Room temperature did not impact logic test scoresLogic test scores were not impacted by the temperature of the room for either male or female students, only math and verbal. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

These are the 25 magic resume words that will land you the job Ladders 2018 Resume Guide

These are the 25 magic resume words that will land you the job Ladders 2018 Resume GuideThese are the 25 magic resume words that will land you the job Ladders 2018 Resume GuideGrew, increased, augmented The trick to writing the perfect resume is choosing the perfect resume words. That is, making good verb choices without a thesaurus. The structure for each bullet point on your list of accomplishments is a success verb plus specific numerical data regarding an accomplishment in your field or role. Which means that youre in the market for 25 or so verbs.Need resume advice? Ask Marc Cenedella inThe ClimbFor a limited time, Marc will be taking your questions about the advice he shares in his new best-selling book,Ladders 2018 Resume Guide Best Practices Advice.Join us in The Climb, our career advice support community on Facebook, and ask awayFinding the perfect resume wordsFinding enough different verbs to say I did it in a clever way is often a struggle for professionals writing their resumes. Typical resume advice has focused on making sure that each verb is an active verb, but weve found two problems with this advice.First, most Americans dont work with active vs. passive verbs on a daily basis, so the concept is not entirely relevant to their lives. Was shot out of a cannon, for example, doesnt count. And, second, even the stable of active verbs includes some very bland duds that do nothing to help persuade a future employer. The worst resume action verbsMy least favorite active verb is managed, but there are others equally as tepid such as established, defined, and performed.None of these are very good, even though they are active, because they dont sell your future employer on what you are able to do, or what benefits you are able to bring to their team. After all, white-collar employees by definition establish, manage, define and perform a wide variety of tasks. But were you any good at them? Thats the important fact a hiring manager or recruiter wants to know .Use success verbs for your resume accomplishmentsWhich makes it important that every bullet point in your resume include a success verb, not just an active verb. Success verbs demonstrate success - something got better. Because you were there, something changed, something improved, something progressed.Verbs such as increased, decreased, improved, reduced, are all success verbs. Explicitly forbidden are active verbs and phrases that are nonetheless static managed, my responsibilities included, hired to, was responsible for, and so forth. Verbs that merely tell a fact rather than show you in a heroic light.Look, we live in the United States of America in the 21st century. Of course you were hired for your current job. You obviously didnt inherit it from grandpa or get appointed to the role by the King. And given the nature of the modern organization, if youre a manager, of course youve managed some number of fellow human beings. And of course you were given a budget with which to do something interesting with those human beings in the service of the organizations greater goals. So when you begin a bullet point with empty non-achievements such as I was hired, I managed and I was responsible for, you are squandering the opportunity to showcase the benefits you brought to your boss and your company in your prior role.Related from Ladders6 reasons recruiters say theyll toss your resume in the trashHeres how to supercharge your resume in 38 minutes12 tips for your best resume everThese are the exact words you should use on your resumeRather than leave you wondering what success verbs might be, Im providing you a list of 25 success verbs you can use for the 25 bullets on your resume.
